Plan to turn Richmond Bridge phone box into coffee joint

In the modern world there's not much use for the iconic red British phone box.

The one at the foot of Richmond Bridge, however, could be about to get a new lease of life.

An application for permission to turn it into a drinks kiosk has been submitted by St Margarets resident Martin Duffy of the Red Box Charitable Trust.

The kiosk will sell coffee, tea and other hot beverages, pre-prepared packed food and cold drinks.

"A key community benefit of this proposal is the creation of employment for young people in Richmond borough whose prospects have been adversely affected by the economic fallout of Covid-19," the application to Richmond Council reads.

"Stock would be sourced from local suppliers (such as Scottie's Coffee, which is fair trade, ethically sourced and hand-roasted in Twickenham)."

The Red Box Charitable Trust says it will donate a proportion of profits from the coffee kiosk to charities in Richmond.

Residents can comment on the proposal on the council website.

A decision is due to be made by February 4.
