Richmond councillor wins national award at Liberal Democrats Party Conference
A local Richmond Borough councillor has received a National award at the Liberal Democrats 2024 Party Conference.
East Sheen Cllr Julia Cambridge picked up The Patsy Calton Award at the party's Autumn Conference in Brighton on Tuesday, 17 September ahead of Lib Dem Leader, Ed Davey's speech.
The Patsy Calton Award, named after the former MP for Cheadle, is given to exceptional women in recognition for their work which could include achieving more for constituents, changing things for the better or in this case work in mentoring and supporting women towards elected office.
Donna Harris, Chair of Liberal Democrat Women, introduced the award and spoke of Julia's tireless work through her role as Vice Chair of the Campaign for Gender Balance.
Julia Cambridge told Nub News: "I am honoured to receive this award in the name of the inspiring Patsy Calton.
"It is right that her legacy and strength are remembered. Not only did she significantly help her community but her sadly lost battle through breast cancer reminds us of her resilience to continue making change even through illness."
She added: "I'm humbled to have been nominated and judged the winner of the Patsy Calton Award 2024 for my work with women in politics.
"Why is this important some ask, diversity and gender balance are critical. We know that supporting women works, they achieve more, stay the course and build resilience.
"I immediately contacted my daughter bursting with pride at the recognition. However recognition has never been a driver for my work, but when it comes it's the icing on the cake."
At the Liberal Democrats Party Conference, attendees could participate in live Q&As with MPs, debate on key issues, meet with expert speakers and receive campaign training.
The five-day conference was marred by the arrest of a man on suspicion of sexual assault on the final night, though he was later released without further action.
