Jubilation in Richmond after London Mayor's rejection of development at old Stag Brewery

Richmond residents, campaign groups and politicians have expressed their jubilation following the rejection of plans for an old brewery site in Mortlake yesterday at City Hall.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan concluded that there was not sufficient affordable housing in the plans and the public benefits offered would not clearly outweigh the harm at the London Assembly Representation Hearing yesterday afternoon.

The result comes after years of campaigning from local groups, including the Mortlake Brewery Community Group.

Francine Bates, the group's Co-Chair, told Nub News: "The community is celebrating The Mayor's decision to block the latest plans for the development of the brewery site.

"This is a victory for common sense.

"Sadiq visited Mortlake on Monday and saw for himself the damage that would result if the scheme went ahead.

"This was reinforced by our excellent team of speakers at yesterday's Hearing.

"We are particularly pleased that the secondary school application was rejected.

"The school is not needed in the area and we hope that Richmond Council will now drop this ludicrous proposal.

"We urge the owners of the site to sit down with the community and work with us to devise a truly sustainable scheme that the residents of Mortlake can fully support."

East Sheen Cllr Julia Cambridge told Nub News: "This is a victory for the community who want a proportional environmentally-friendly plan for the former brewery site which provides the necessary infrastructure.

"Like the Mayor, I would like to see properly affordable housing in any revised scheme."

Sarah Olney, MP for Richmond Park, has long opposed the decision and applauded yesterday's decision.

She said: "This is welcome news and will be loudly cheered by many of my constituents. The indefinite closure of Hammersmith Bridge to motor traffic has had severe consequences on congestion in the area, making the lack of consideration given by the developer to air quality hugely alarming.

"I congratulate all the local residents in attendance for the way they put forward their cases during the hearing.

"I was especially pleased to see the Mayor factor into his decision-making the impact the development would have had on local residents.

"I have been pressing him to speak Chertsey Court residents to better understand their concerns about the overbearing nature of the development.

"I am therefore hugely grateful that their everyday experiences were given due consideration."

Melissa Compton-Edwards, co-ordinator of the East Sheen group of Mums for Lungs, said that the group celebrates the decision but is disappointed that the mayor did not directly address the plans for cars in the rejected development proposals.

She told Nub News: "We're very glad that these proposals have been rejected. But we're disappointed that the Mayor didn't insist that any future development on this site is car-free, except for car parking for disabled people and essential services, with an onsite car club and surrounding small-area controlled parking zones to prevent overspill parking and reduce traffic.

"We don't want to see a new proposal come forward which still has a huge number of private car parking spaces as we'll be back to square one as far as the traffic problems a car-centric development poses are concerned."
