REVIEW: Efes Plus Richmond – does it serve London’s 'finest döner'?

Turkish and Mediterranean restaurant Efes Plus officially opened in Richmond last month, replacing the historic chippy Quality Fish & Chip Restaurant.
Richmond Nub News visited the new eatery last week to see if it is truly one of London's "finest döner".
Sandwiched between The Open Book and Sebastian's Italian, Efes Plus' dark green exterior gives way to an elegant interior with neutral tones.
What immediately stands out in the restaurant is the natural lighting from the ceiling windows, which were added when it became Efes Plus.

Recommended by the restaurant, to start, I had Pastrami Hummus, Sautéed Prawns, Girit Ezme, and Antep Lahmacun.
The hummus had a great nutty, buttery taste, enhanced by the chilli oil, with an enjoyable crunchy texture from the Turkish pastrami.
The sautéed prawns were cooked to perfection, with an amazing crunch and a subtle touch of flavour from the garlic oil.

It was my first time trying Antep Lahmacun, a Turkish flatbread with minced meat, spices, and herbs, and I must say, it was a pleasant surprise.
The flatbread literally melted in my mouth, and the minced lamb was brilliantly seasoned.

It was also my first time trying Girit Ezme, a dish made from a combination of feta cheese, curd cheese, pistachios, basil, yoghurt, and nuts, which tasted as good as it looked.
I found myself adding this to many pieces of bread.
For the main course, I had a massive cast iron plate of Iskender – lamb döner with tomato sauce, pide croutons, and yoghurt.
The lamb was delicious and tender, and the croutons absorbed the tomato sauce perfectly. I'd recommend it if you're still hungry after all the meze.

To drink, I had Ayran, a traditional Turkish drink made from chilled yoghurt, water, and salt. As expected, it was slightly sweet and salty, yet tasty.
For dessert, I had their Burma Antep Baklava – four pieces of pistachio burma baklava that were crunchy yet soft, sweet treats that dissolved in your mouth.

It is also worth mentioning that all the food was freshly prepared and quickly served by the welcoming staff at Efes Plus.
Noticing that I was about to slip into a food coma, the staff offered me Turkish tea, which helped wash down the food and perk me up.
Overall, the dining experience at Efes Plus Richmond is excellent, with a team that is very receptive and friendly.
Excluding drinks, an average meal would cost somewhere between £15 - £20 per person which is fair considering the quality and variety of dishes on offer.
Is it London's "finest döner"? Not sure. Is it Richmond's finest döner? Maybe.
