The type of crimes and the frequency they are committed varies considerably across Richmond, data shows.

Richmond is London's safest borough, with an overall crime rate of 127 offences per 1,000 people. At the other end of the scale Camden records 283 crimes per 1,000 people.

But within the borough there is considerable variation in offending.

We looked at the police's dashboard to see what it could tell us about crime in four central Richmond areas.

Ham, Petersham and Richmond Riverside recorded 42 crimes in July, 44 in August and 61 in September.

Over the past two years, violence against a person is the most common offence and the ward has a crime rate of 151 per 1,000 people.

In Richmond Park there were six crimes in July, 12 in August and nine last month. Drug offences were most common. The crime rate is just 25 offences per 1,000 people.

South Richmond has the highest crime rate of the four areas at 283 crimes per 1,000 people.

Crime did not drop off last month: there were 121 offences in both July and August and 122 in September.

This was also seen last year in South Richmond, when 127 crimes were committed in September and 121 in August 2019.

The most common type of crime here - occuring more than twice as regularly as the next most frequent - was theft.

North Richmond recorded 65 crimes in July, 83 in August and 106 in September.

Vehicle offences were most common and there were 160 offences per 1,000 people.

Crime is down this year as the national lockdown meant that the number of offences plummeted between March and June.
