The show, which runs until Saturday evening, stars the ever suave Havers opposite the Olivier Award winning Patricia Hodge.

On Sunday, the British Comedy Award winner Nina Conti, the quick-thinking queen of ventriloquism, brings her pioneering new dating show to Richmond for one night only.

And on Monday, Alex Horne, best known for Taskmaster and his many Radio 4 appearances, arrives with The Horne Section, his hugely popular musical and comedy show.

Richmond Literature Festival

Enter the highly original world of the 18th-century aristocrat, poet, travel writer and vaccination pioneer, Lady Mary Wortley Montagu, with biographer Jo Willett.

A former resident of Twickenham, she was a trailblazer in Britain and someone who has a special resonance in a time of pandemic.

In April 1721, when a smallpox epidemic was raging, Lady Mary took the courageous step of inoculating her three-year-old daughter, using a process she had witnessed when she lived in Turkey.

This action, opposed at the time by doctors, politicians and clerics, would eventually lead to the eradication of smallpox and the prevention of millions of deaths.

Not only a scientific campaigner, Lady Mary was a prolific writer, a feminist thinker and an enthusiastic traveller. She lived in Twickenham at the same time as Alexander Pope, who wrote her love letters until she rejected his advances, after which she became a target of his grotesque poetic satires.

This event, at the Old Town Hall, Richmond, on Saturday afternoon is chaired by biographer and historian Anne Sebba.

Many of the Festival's events are a sell-out, including a new approach to Greek mythology with three writers - Sarvat Hasin, Jennifer Saint and Charlotte Higgins – at the Old Town Hall on Friday.

Among the events on offer today – Thursday - are a drama workshop for youngsters run by Richmond Theatre's Creative Learning department.

Tomorrow evening, there will be performance by the Perrin Jazz Collective brings you some of the well-loved standards as you enjoy your after work drinks.
