Take two at getting up and running for this Richmond coffee shop.

The lockdown came at a particularly sudden time for Urban Pantry, which had opened in Richmond Road near the bridge only 10 days prior.

Fortunately Patricia Marnitz, from the new shop, is a positive person and says "we're ready to roll again and we've got really good coffee".

It reopened a fortnight ago and - touches wood - is set to enjoy an unbroken boom in business as word of its arrival spreads around the Richmond community.

"We try to use local people like Bliss Brownies, based in Richmond," she said.

"The people who make our croissants and bread, they're based in Brentford. Capital Coffee is in Wimbledon.

"So we try to stay really local with our produce and people like that."

They also use Natoora, an Italian company that specialises in high quality, seasonal produce, she said.

Speaking about the enforced closure in March, Ms Marnitz said: "That felt a bit awkward. It felt like really bad timing.

"We thought 'Are they going to think that we've gone for good now that we're closed?'

"We'd got everything ready and open and then for this to happen, it was like 'Oh no!'."

A good vibe in the area

Fast forward three months, and she is delighted with the reception the shop has received since reopening.

"People are very supportive," she said.

"They're coming in and saying 'We're so happy, we have top coffee now. It really needed a business like yours'.

"It's great, we're getting to know the locals. They come every day, some of them every morning. It's a good vibe in this area."

Award winners

Urban Pantry is best known in South West London for its award-winning Chiswick store, which proudly boasts that it serves up the "BEST BREAKFAST IN THE UK OFFICIALLY" after winning in last year's National Breakfast Awards.

They also also scooped Time Out magazine's award for best lunch, too.

It's clear they were onto a winning recipe, but the expansion into Richmond came with a surprising concoction.

Some pilates with your coffee?

Urban Pantry's owner Kate Frobisher was approached by pilates and personal training company Studio 17 about the possibility of teaming up and sharing a space.

Fitness sessions are now run at the back of the coffee shop in 394 Richmond Road, and Ms Marnitz says the two sometimes go hand in hand.

"It's an interesting partnership," she said, "and it works well. When people come in for class they often get a coffee or a fruit smoothie."

Looking to the future, she said the arrival of Deer Park School opposite will hopefully bring her an entirely new customer base.

"We think it's going to be really good when the school opens because the mums and dads will probably stop on their school run to get a coffee.

"So I think we're going to be really busy come September.

"But now we're back and ready to roll again and we've got really good coffee."
