Parents and guardians across Richmond are being reminded by Transport for London (TfL) to apply for their child's Zip Oyster photocard in time for the start of the new school term.

The cards, which are available for children and young people aged 5–10, 11–15 and 16+, provide free and discounted travel on buses, trams and trains across London.

They are designed to help families keep costs down while encouraging young Londoners to travel more "sustainably" and "independently".

For younger children, the 5–10 Zip Oyster photocard allows free travel on buses, the Tube, trams, DLR, London Overground, the Elizabeth line and most National Rail services in the capital.

The 11–15 Zip Oyster photocard gives free bus and tram travel, plus 50% off Tube and rail journeys.

TfL's Customer Director, Emma Strain, said: "Ensuring parents are aware of the free travel and reduced fares that their children may be eligible to receive on our transport services is a priority to us.

"Whether travelling to school or visiting friends, a Zip Oyster photocard is essential to getting around London in the most cost-efficient way possible.

"We are reminding parents to check their children's Zip Oyster photocards so they can apply for new photocards if required, allowing their children to make the most out of London's Tube, bus and rail network ahead of the new school term."

Alongside the photocard scheme, TfL also runs its Travel for Life education programme, which supports schools across London to promote safe, active and sustainable travel.

Applications can be made online at the TfL website, and families are being encouraged to apply early to avoid delays before term begins.

More information, including how to apply, is available at TfL's website here.
