Roads of Richmond: A history of Rosemont Road

By The Editor 6th Dec 2020

This piece was produced by estate agents N&N Richmond - many thanks!

Rosemont Road is located just off Richmond Hill. It is an extremely pretty no-through road, which has retained its original Victorian street lamps.

The road was once known as Alma Villas, when the parish lands were sold to developer Sir Thomas Newbry Reeve who built the first workers cottages in 1850.

These houses are on the right hand side of the road, are semi-detached '2 up 2 downs' with a small garden to the side. However, over the years, some owners have extended into these gardens creating driveways to the front and little courtyards to the rear.

The cottages overlook the grounds of what is now The Vineyard Primary School.

The land was once an extensive orchard and some old and very rare varieties of apple trees have survived and can still be seen peeping over the wall.

The houses may be small and may only have little gardens but they are some of the most highly valued real estate in Richmond.

On the left side of the road the houses were built slightly later, circa 1860. They are all semi-detached, with four bedrooms.

These houses came with good sized gardens with a lovely open aspect.

The Marlborough public house on Friars Stile Road (formerly The Rosemont Country Hotel) once had a much longer garden which ran the parallel length of Rosemont Road.

Almost half its land was sold off to any Rosemont resident wishing to extend their garden.

There were those who didn't want to take up the offer, so some owners bought their neighbours sections which resulted in many houses now having extremely large L shaped plots.

At the bottom of the road there are three detached, rather cool houses built in the 1970s when this land was sold off by the neighbouring properties.

The houses on Rosemont are not huge, only a few exceeding 2,000 sq ft, but that is what makes it unique for Richmond Hill.

The road continues to attract an eclectic mix of friendly folk. It is social and neighbourly without being intrusive. A very special place to live.

Average property price: £1,550,000.00 (April 2020)

Local knowledge and neighbourhood haunts: Rosemont is in the heart of Richmond Hill village with a lovely selection of independent shops including The Good Wine Shop and Luna Da Luca Delicatessen and eateries Richmond Hill Bakery and Luna Da Luca Pizzeria.

The view of Richmond Hill made famous by Turner is a short stroll along Friars Stile Road, as are the beautiful Terrace Gardens and the Roebuck Pub - the perfect place to enjoy a take-out pint and admire the view on the terrace.

It is in the enviable position of being in the guaranteed catchment for the Oftsted rated outstanding Vineyard Primary School and in the catchment for two of the three most outstanding state senior schools: co-ed Grey Court (Ham) and Waldegrave School (Twickenham) which is a girls' school with a co-ed sixth form.

Richmond train station (0.9 miles) is a 15 minute walk and it's a 10 minute walk into the centre of town.

The 371 bus stop by St Mathias Church goes to the town centre and station one way and to Kingston the other way.

A Rosemont resident of 40 years, Jim, was asked where he was going on holiday and replied: "I am on holiday."
