Richmond station has been fully returned to its 1930s style following a multi-year restoration by South Western Railway (SWR).

The Grade II listed building, first opened in 1937 and designed by Southern Railway's chief architect James Robb Scott, has undergone an extensive programme of works to revive its Art Deco character both inside and out.

The project, delivered in partnership with Network Rail, the Railway Heritage Trust and the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames, began in 2023 and was officially completed this September.

The first phase saw the station's Portland stone façade cleaned, its bronze and mahogany entrance doors restored, and its high-level bronze lettering reinstalled.

The front of the station was refurbished in March (credit: SWR).

New flagpoles, period-appropriate paint colours and carefully repaired detailing completed the exterior makeover.

Inside, the ticket hall has been given a "dramatic revival".

Original timber friezes and green glass signage have been uncovered and restored, chandelier-style light fittings inspired by the 1930s have been installed, and new oak shopfronts and retro poster frames now give the concourse an authentic period feel.

A new lighting scheme highlights the canopy and façade at night, while original signs, including one from WH Smith, have been preserved.

Chris Gregory, Asset Enhancement Manager for South Western Railway, said: "We are very proud of what has been achieved, bringing the station back to its original heritage condition and providing a fantastic gateway to Richmond."

One of the final touches came this month with the display of an original metal sign, previously on the exterior of the station, now showcased inside the booking hall thanks to a loan from the London Transport Museum.
