The country may be wrapped up in trying to manage the fall-out from Brexit, but Richmond is moving to cement its ties with Europe.

On Friday Richmond Mayor Geoff Acton and Richmond Park MP Sarah Olney unveiled a new information board about Richmond's twin towns of Fontainebleau in France and Konstanz in Germany.

This board can be found outside the East Sheen Library on Sheen Lane and was commissioned by the Richmond in Europe Association to strengthen Richmond's European connections.

The board provides information about our twinned cities and celebrates our long standing connection with them.

Richmond has been partnered with Fontainebleau since 1977 and most notably celebrated this connection in 2017 for the 40th anniversary with a cycle ride from Fontainebleau to Twickenham, which also raised money for the local charity Street Invest.

Konstanz has been linked with Richmond since 1983 and our cultural ties are deep including student exchanges and even younger students attending a youth council conference in Konstanz.

Fontainebleau and Konstanz are themselves both linked which itself deepens the ties between the three towns.

A reaffirmation event to celebrate the relationships between the towns will take place in 2025, this comes after it's postponement in 2020 and 2021.

Councillor Julia Cambridge tweeted a picture of the event, saying: "Wonderful afternoon outside the Sheen Lane Centre for the twin towns information board unveiling. So much work from Richmond in Europe. Music from St Margarets Elastic Band!"
