A police investigation has been launched after an elderly man laying wreaths on a family grave in Hampton was attacked in broad daylight.
The attack on Terry Nicholls occurred at 9.40am on December 20 in the Broad Lane Cemetery, Hampton, however police have only now launched an appeal for witnesses.
Initially, the shocked victim, who received four wounds, thought he may have been shot with a pellet gun or stabbed.
Subsequently, he had a small item, which has the appearance of a biro nib, removed from his neck in hospital.
The fact that the item broke off and lodged in his neck, coupled with heavy bruising, gives some insight into the force of the shocking attack.
Details were revealed by Mr Nicholls' family on social media, who were keen to warn other vulnerable people in the area.
The victim's wife, Mary Nicholls, said: "I can't tell you how shocked I feel that some bloody lunatic is loose and needs to be caught quickly. My husband is 77 and the nicest man."
Daughter, Laura Nicholls, said: "For the life of me I can't understand why anyone would do this to a 77 year old man who was simply laying wreaths on his mother and father in law's graves. My dad is the nicest bloke in the world.
"Please can everyone stay safe and vigilant as they - the police - still haven't got this man."
She said the attacker was aged 25-35 and dressed in dark clothes.
Another daughter, Clare, added: "It is very difficult to comprehend who or why anyone would do such a thing to a kind, gentle man laying wreaths on my grandparents' graves.
"The police and NHS have been amazing and they deserve a big shout out for everything they have done so far and are continuing to do."
The family thanked one gentleman who came to Terry's aid and others in the community for their well-wishes and support.
It is understood that the police have been seeking Ring doorbell footage and bus CCTV in their manhunt.
The Metropolitan Police said: "Police were called at around 09.40hrs on Tuesday, December 20, by London Ambulance Service to Broad Lane to reports of a man injured.
"Officers attended to discover a 77-year-old man suffering from an injury to his neck. His injuries were not life threatening."
They added: "Detectives from South West Command are investigating. Anyone with information is asked to call 101 quoting ref: CAD1860/20Dec.
