Jam today– ‘Ghost hole’ disrupts traffic through Richmond

Traffic in the centre of Richmond has been disrupted by a 'ghost hole'.

A set of barriers set up around a hole on Eton Street, close to Whole Foods Market, has blocked the one-way system through the town centre today - Wednesday.

Despite the disruption, the site was completely deserted this morning with no sign of any activity to complete whatever work is necessary.

Strangely, there were no signs to identify who is carrying out the work or when the problem will be resolved.

Cars, buses and other vehicles are on diversion, however traffic travelling from Richmond towards Twickenham, via Richmond Bridge, is facing jams and delays at peak periods.

Richmond Council indicated that the road has been dug up for emergency utility works and suggested it will not re-open until Monday – January 9.

The Council said the emergency road closure was caused by the need to repair a burst water main. While this work has been completed, it will take several days to fill the hole and reinstate the road.
