A dog had a fright today after falling down a rabbit hole in Richmond Park.

Fortunately for the adorable dachshund Topsy, help was at hand.

Firefighters, police and staff from the Royal Parks charity were fast on the scene and hauled him out.

Royal Parks Police posted three photos of the incident.

One of the images shows the team of five firefighters, one of whom is cradling the pup in his arms.

The parks police wrote on Twitter: "A dachshund has been rescued after getting stuck down a rabbit hole under a tree in #RichmondPark.

"@MPSRoyal_Parks @theroyalparks and @LondonFire all in attendance.

"They were on their hands and knees to dig him out #luckydoggy."

They added: "The dog was stuck underground for about 4 hours, thankfully he is in good health and with a very happy owner."

Kingston fire station officer Guy Pedliham, who was at the scene, said: "The dog was in distress and certainly couldn't get out on her own.

"Under the guidance of the park management we dug and got them out head first.

"I have a dachshund myself so it made it a bit more personal and I'm really pleased we were able to return Topsy uninjured."

The brigade was called at 4.02pm and said the incident was over by 5.26pm.
