You may have spotted the Covid Alert Level on the official app go up from medium to high.

Even though Richmond's coronavirus infection rate has been accelerating throughout the whole of October, the alert level did not increase until this weekend.

So why is this and what does 'high' mean?

The alert level on the NHS Covid-19 app relates to the three-tier system of local lockdowns that the government is using to tackle the virus.

The whole of London (including Richmond) moved into Tier 2 at 00.01am on Saturday, October 17.

In Tier 2 residents cannot spend time with someone from another household in any indoor setting, including pubs and restaurants.

The app now tells users: "Coronavirus cases are high in your area.
