Bicycle thefts at railway stations across Richmond have fallen by more than half since 2023, new figures reveal, but police have made no arrests for station bike theft in the borough for the past two years.

Reported bike thefts at Richmond stations dropped from 198 in 2023 to just 97 in the first ten months of 2025, a decline of 51 per cent.

However, while five people were arrested and convicted for station bike theft in 2023, there have been zero arrests, zero charges, and zero convictions in both 2024 and 2025.

A British Transport Police spokesperson said: "We have officers across the rail network around the clock, at stations and on trains, to deter and detect crimes, and we are pleased to see a decrease in the amount of bikes stolen from stations across Richmond.

"Our patrols are guided by intelligence to ensure that our officers are exactly where they are most needed. When crimes do happen, we're fortunate to work in a CCTV rich environment to help to bring offenders to justice.

"We are aware that every offence is one too many."

Twickenham station recorded the highest number of thefts across the three-year period, with 136 bikes stolen, followed by Richmond station with 77 thefts.

Teddington saw 81 thefts over the same period.

The drop in thefts, from 162 in 2024 to 97 in the first ten months of 2025, may offer some encouragement to cyclists.

However, only 11 suspects were identified across all three years, with nine in 2023 and just one each in 2024 and 2025.

Richmond Council confirmed it allocates approximately £105,000 annually for secure cycle parking expansion, £65,000 from Transport for London and around £40,000 from its own funds.

Still, the authority does not directly undertake bike-marking schemes, which are carried out by police.

When asked about measures to strengthen safety around transport hubs, the council pointed to its Active Travel Strategy, which aims to have 75% of all trips covered by active travel by 2041.

A Richmond Council spokesperson said: "Any theft in our borough is one too many.

"While enforcement and investigations fall under the responsibility of Police, the borough's Community Safety Partnership brings together the Council, Police, and other local organisations to prevent and reduce crime.

"We work with our partners to help residents protect their bicycles through measures such as bike-marking, secure parking, and registration on national databases.

"Richmond is proud to be a pro-cycling borough.

"Our Active Travel Strategy sets out ambitious plans to expand cycle lanes, improve road safety, add secure cycle parking, and provide training to encourage more people to travel sustainably.

"A new off-street and covered cycle hub opened last year at Richmond Station and we're working with our partners to identify further measures that could strengthen safety in and around key transport hubs."

The British Transport Police works with the rail network to help keep the rail network safe while people travel, including hosting bike marking pop ups at stations across England, Scotland, and Wales.

Cyclists can register their bikes on the bike register, which can help reunite bike owners with their bikes.
