Barclays bank in Richmond remains closed until further notice after a targeted attack from a pro-Palestine protest group which saw the branch vandalised on Monday, 11 June.

The George Street, Richmond branch was one of 20 across England and Scotland that saw its exterior covered in red paint and had its windows smashed by Palestine Action.

At the time of writing this (13 June), the Richmond branch issued a statement announcing its unforeseen closure after events beyond the bank's "control."

On a note stuck to the boarded up entrance of the branch, the bank writes: "Customer Notice. Sorry, but due to circumstances beyond our control, we're unable to open this branch at the moment.

"We're doing everything we can to get things up and running again. In the meantime, please accept our apologies.

"Our colleagues at our nearest branch will be happy to help you. Their address is: 6 Clarence Street Kingston Upon Thames KT1 1 NY

"You will find the nearest Cash Point at: HSBC 67 George Street, Richmond, TW9 1HG

"If you have any other questions, please call our Customer Services team on 0345 7 345345.

"We look forward to seeing you soon."

Barclays Richmond's shock closure will come as a disappointment to those residents who rely on the branch for their banking services.

However, one local and customer of Barclays Richmond, who wishes to remain anonymous, expresses concern the attack has on staff jobs and the community.

They tell Nub News: "As a local Barclays customer, online banking means I've used local branches less and handled far less cash in recent years too.

"That said, [it is] never great to see our local high street attacked, especially when it's likely to hasten the demise of accessible banking staff jobs and premises alike.

"Whatever political motivations, surely attacking our local high streets should never be the answer."

Despite the surprise shutting of the bank, Barclays Richmond are offering its customers an alternative with some banking services with its Barclays Local pop ups close by.
