Montage of how the Angel and Crown pub fed the poor throughout lockdown

More than 1,000 hours volunteered, 5,000 meals cooked, 285 items of clothing given out and 7,000 bottles of water distributed.

That's the scale of the operation the Angel and Crown in Richmond carried out over the first three months of lockdown, providing a safety net for the poor, homeless, vulnerable and those facing financial hardship.

The pub in Church Court produced a video montage, which you can watch above, looking back on its efforts.

The community-minded team wasted no time in setting out to support the Richmond public, springing into action a day after the lockdown was imposed on Monday, March 23.

"On March 24 we embarked on a journey to feed all those who could not feed themselves," the pub says in the video.

"For 89 days anyone in need of food, drink or clothing used our grab and go service.

"And it was all made possible by a community coming together to support their most vulnerable.

"We got through it together. To all of you, thank you."

Super Saturday reopening

The Angel and Crown reopened last weekend and is now back to being a normal pub again.

General manager Hannah Lawson said she had missed it "massively". "It's nice to have punters back in," she said.

They appear to have flocked back.

When we visited shortly after lunchtime on Tuesday, July 7, the pub was nearly full with customers.

Barring a few rearranged tables and a switch to table service, which kept Ms Lawson on her toes, it appeared to be normal service resumed.

"The dynamic is a bit different," she said. "People have to make sure they sanitise their hands before they come in."

The popular Saturday live music nights featuring local bands such as Honeyshack, rock n roller Roland Paul who performs on Sundays and open mic Mondays, will not be immediately resuming.

But if the number of new cases of the Covid-19 remains low, it will hopefully not be too long before this part of the pub relaunches too.
