Lidl construction sends Richmond's road network into gridlock

Traffic is crawling on roads across Richmond with motorists taking to social media to vent their frustration.

Two-way traffic signals are in place on Richmond Road outside the future Lidl supermarket.

The retailer has brought it in an enormous crane which is being used to move large metal girders.

The signals mean traffic can only pass in one direction at a time, and is causing tailbacks on roads all over the town and in Twickenham.

Lucy Hagger wrote: "This is a total mess trying to get from Twickenham to Richmond. The signals really need sorting from St Stephens Church. Not moved for 20 mins."

Lidl's may have aimed to limit disruption by scheduling the works on a weekend, but this seems to have backfired.

There are also a number of rail replacement double decker buses on the roads in Richmond today, causing additional traffic.

Lidl plans to open the new supermarket later this autumn.
