Yesterday the third highest daily total of new coronavirus cases was recorded in the UK, with 6,178 people testing positive.

It was also the highest total since May.

Prime Miniser Boris Johnson this week announced new restrictions designed to limit the spread of the virus throughout the population.

Richmond Nub News has reported regularly on infection rates and the number of cases in our borough.

So, amid high levels across the country, what are the current figures for Richmond?

In the most recent nine-day period for which data is available, between September 12-20, there have been 34 new cases of Covid-19.

This is fewer than earlier in mid-August when a spike in cases in Richmond was linked to residents going on holiday. There were 42 cases in a nine-day period - eight more than today.

Richmond has an infection rate of 383.3 cases per 100,000 in the population, below the London average of 516.4 cases and the UK average of 627.

New official app

The leader of Richmond Council today urged residents to download the new NHS COVID-19 app.

Cllr Gareth Roberts said: "We are seeing spikes across the country so I urge people to download the app and help support the test and trace service so together we can keep the virus under control here in Richmond upon Thames and protect people as much as possible.

"Finally, as ever, we ask that people continue to play their part by washing hands regularly, socially distancing, wearing face coverings where appropriate, and following the latest guidance."
