Twickenham testing centre to remain open as fans frozen out of rugby games

The regional Covid-19 testing centre at Twickenham Stadium WILL remain open.

As we reported, the drive-in centre, which is one of 50 major testing sites around the UK, was due to close at the end of September.

This decision has now been reversed, as the new restrictions announced by Prime Minister Boris Johnson yesterday impact on fan attendance at sports matches.

Twickenham was due to host two matches over the October 24 and 25 weekend, with up to 44,000 fans.

The fixtures included England vs Barbarians on Sunday, October 25.

Tickets for the game are no longer available to buy on the Twickenham Stadium website, however, after the government paused the reintroduction of fans to grounds.

Twickenham MP Munira Wilson (Lib Dems) tweeted: "Pleased to hear that the #Twickenham Covid testing centre at @RFUHomeTurf will remain open, given spectators will not now be returning next month.

"But it's not much use if residents can't access tests when they need them!"

This news will come as a relief to residents who were already struggling to get a test, and those concerned about thousands of people coming to town for the rugby games.

Our other nearest test centres would have been Chessington or Heathrow.

Residents have been told to only get a test if you show symptoms of coronavirus.
