Gary McCann felt Hampton and Richmond took advantage of Chelmsford City's FA Cup commitments in their 2-0 win in National League South.
Hampton and Richmond ended a four-match losing run as Luis Fernandez and Tommy Block's penalty capped a valiant performance with a win against high flying Chelmsford.
McCann said he thought Chelmsford allowed themselves to be distracted by Monday's FA Cup First Round Replay against Barnet, and Hampton capitalised upon that.
Speaking to club media, he said: "I will tell you how it is, I think there was definitely one eye on Monday [against Barnet], I think Robbie [Simpson, Chelmsford manager] will tell you otherwise.
"Subconsciously you can't help yourself, it is a massive game for their football club and you can see in his team selection, they had a bit of rotation in there and I am sure that that was with one eye on the Barnet game.
"But it is still a strong enough side, they still had a lot of their threat and intention out on the pitch and we have coped with it.
"I felt we defended brilliantly throughout the whole game and this is something to build on.
"You could see the importance of Luis Fernandez, I thought he was excellent again today, this was only his first 90 minutes and he got himself another goal and you could see what purpose he had in both boxes.
"There is something that can be formed between him and Dean [Inman], but I thought there were lots of excellent performances.
"It was a pleasing performance and definitely something to build on, it stopped the run of negative results and we have done it at a place that is very difficult to get points at."
McCann also admittedly that it had been a tough time for him in recent weeks as Hampton were struggling for results.
He said: "This is a much better feeling, there is no question that defeats hurt and they stay with me longer than most.
"I am not good company, I think my wife would share that with you in the last few weeks, it has not been easy.
"Of course, there have been situations which have been difficult and challenges that were tough to overcome, but the boys have never stopped trying.
"Even after a couple of really poor defeats, I didn't at one stage feel that the players weren't trying.
"It is a group that is honest and whole hearted and I think that there is something starting to form if we can get ourselves fit and healthy and everyone back."
