Gary McCann had nothing but praise for the mentality of his squad despite losing their fifth game in six 2-0 at home against Dover Athletic.

Hampton conceded twice in the first half as they gave a good account of themselves against Dover, but failed to make good on the openings they created.

McCann said that Hampton had their backs against the wall given their injury crisis and he was impressed by the way they fought in spite of disastrous start to the game.

Speaking to club media, he said: "I don't know what the general consensus is around the ground, but I feel like the players have left everything out on the pitch.

"Those are the demands that we put into the changing room because we knew we were backs against the wall today.

"You could have seen a team fold, on the back of what we have dealt with, they could have just rolled over, but they never did that.

"That is not what my teams are made of and they have had a right go. It was the start from hell and you can't concede that early in the game at any level.

"The start was important today and we spoke about that, we needed to bed the new players in and let them get a feel for the game, and all of a sudden we are behind.

"We take a lot of pride from the response, we could have gone the other way, but we never looked to do that."

The Beavers have struggled with converting the chances that they create this season, but McCann said he can't quite work out why it keeps happening.

He said: "I looked at our starting 11 and I felt it was capable of getting something out of today's game and if we were a little more decisive and played with a little more conviction in the final third then we could have done.

"We just need that bit more desire to get on the end of things and put the ball in the net.

"It has been a problem for us all season, we have had some balls whizz across the face of goal, we have had some crosses come in, we have had numerous restarts and we just don't seem to get on the end of enough.

"That is something we have to look at as we do plenty of work on it, we worked on that on Thursday with the very little that we did

"With that little bit more conviction in the final third or if we got that next goal, because we were camped in their half, we just lacked that bit of desire in the final third to turn that play that we had into real chances."
