A woman has escaped serious injury after falling from Richmond Bridge onto the towpath below.

Eyewitnesses took to social media after the incident at 5:30pm on Sunday, 12 May, with one user on Nextdoor reporting "loads of police and ambulances" attending the scene and Richmond Road leading to Twickenham being taped off.

"It's manic," added David, captioning his photo from the scene.

Along with police and ambulance services were lifeboat crews from both Chiswick and Teddington stations, with the latter being called off en-route according to an RNLI spokesperson.

The woman was taken to hospital, but the police say "her injuries were not assessed as life-threatening or life changing".

A Metropolitan Police spokesperson said: "Police were called at 6:30pm on Saturday, 11 May, to assist London Ambulance Service following [a] report of a fall from height on Richmond Road, Twickenham.

"Officers attended and a woman was taken to hospital.

"Her injuries were not assessed as life-threatening or life changing."

Emergency services were stretched over the weekend, as the incident was followed by a major search for a missing swimmer upstream in Kingston.

After a day of searching from RNLI crews, healthcare workers, and Met Police maritime patrol units, a body has been found which is believed to be that of the missing swimmer.

However the body is yet to be formally identified.
