Updated weather warnings as Richmond braced for erratic few days

By The Editor 23rd Dec 2020

A mixed bag of weather is coming to Richmond over the next few days.

Starting today (Wednesday, December 23), a weather warning for rain is in place and has been updated by the Met Office.

It became active at 6am and runs until 2am on Thursday. Although the rain held off this morning in Richmond, it is just starting to fall and we can expect the rest of the day to be damp.

Thundery showers are possible until 2pm. Thick cloud will then bed in and light rain showers are then expected until past midnight.

Temperatures will drop tomorrow for Christmas Eve to a maximum of 5C and it's a similar forecast for Christmas Day - but the sun is set to shine.

After this, the weather may turn again. A wind warning has been issued between 3pm on Boxing Day and noon the next day.

The warning covers much of England, with the Met Office saying the following is possible:

  • road, rail, air and ferry services may be affected, with longer journey times and cancellations possible
  • some roads and bridges may close
  • power cuts may occur, with the potential to affect other services, such as mobile phone coverage
  • injuries and danger to life could occur from large waves and beach material being thrown onto sea fronts, coastal roads and properties
  • some damage to buildings, such as tiles blown from roofs, could happen

Winds of only 12mph have been predicted in Richmond, but there's a chance they'll pick up as Boxing Day approaches. Temperatures will climb back again to 10C.

To cap the week, Sunday (December 27) is set to make a wet start and the sun make poke its head out in between showers in the late morning.

The rest of the day will be cloudy with a possible burst of sunshine around 3pm and temperatures dropping from 7C to 1C at night.
