Industrial action by members of the ASLEF union will affect train services through south west London until Saturday.
Separately, a signal failure at Richmond this morning – Monday - caused cancellations and severe delays on the Underground.
While no strike action has been called by ASLEF for this week, members are being instructed not to work any overtime or volunteer to work on rest days.
South Western Railways said it – like other train companies – relies on a certain amount of overtime and rest day working to operate their usual timetables.
As a result, SWR has created a new timetable – taking out many services – through to the weekend.
Many services in and out of Waterloo will be reduced to one per hour during non-peak periods.
Looking ahead, the RMT has announced strike action involving SWR and 13 other companies on Thursday July 20, Saturday July 22, and Saturday July 29.
ASLEF General Secretary, Mick Whelan, said: "Train drivers are sick to the back teeth of their employers and the government failing to negotiate in good faith, and blaming drivers for their inability to manage services and the rail industry effectively."
