Temporary cycle lanes will open across Hammersmith Bridge it was announced yesterday (7 February).

Hammersmith Bridge will re-open to cyclists, cargo bikes and e-scooters from Tuesday 13 February.

The new two-way central lane across the bridge to allow greater access to residents, visitors and businesses on both sides of the river.

Spanning three metres wide, the cycle lane is likely to remain open for around ten weeks.

This means that cyclists will no longer have to dismount and walk their bikes across, which frees up the footways for pedestrians.

Motorbikes and mopeds will not be allowed to use the bridge and marshals will be on duty 24/7 to handle traffic management.

The decision to repair and reopen the carriageway comes because of a pause in stabilisation works on the Grade II* listed bridge.

The pause follows damage sustained by the structure caused by a boat hitting the bridge in December.

Sarah Olney, MP for Richmond Park has welcomed the decision from Hammersmith and Fulham Council.

She said: "Getting a cycle lane on the bridge is a welcome step, but the fact repairs have been paused isn't cause for celebration.

"During the 2019 election, the Conservatives committed to getting the bridge fixed, yet once the results were declared, they seemingly changed their tune.

"The Government therefore should step up, honour that commitment, fund the repairs of the bridge and end this ongoing nightmare for local residents."
