Sir Ian McKellen is set to return to the stage for a rare and intimate theatrical event in support of the Orange Tree Theatre (OT) in Richmond.

The acclaimed actor will present Stories, Stage & Shakespeare, a brand-new limited-run show blending conversation and performance, created to raise vital funds for the OT's future work.

All proceeds will support the theatre's productions, education and community programmes, as well as planned improvements to its building through an upcoming capital project.

The event will take place at Richmond Theatre, with three performances only on 10 and 11 January 2026.

Sir Ian McKellen said: "The Orange Tree is a wonderfully small, intimate theatre where exciting productions happen.

"They're renovating the front of house to get rid of all those dreadful stairs. So, I wanted to help fundraise for not only that, but their productions and work outside of the theatre with schools."

OT's Artistic Director Tom Littler said the announcement comes at a pivotal moment for the organisation.

"We're thrilled and deeply touched that Ian has chosen to create this event in support of the Orange Tree," Littler said.

"His generosity — and the generosity of Richmond Theatre in hosting us — arrives at a transformative moment for us as we reimagine our building and expand the work we can do on and off stage."

A limited number of VIP tickets will be available for the Sunday, 11 January performance, offering guests the chance to attend an exclusive post-show reception at Scott's Richmond with Sir Ian McKellen.

The reception will include champagne and canapés, with bookings available directly through the Orange Tree Theatre. Numbers are strictly limited.

Ticket sales open in stages:

  • OT Members and Patrons: Wednesday, 17 December at 10am
  • ATG+ Members: Thursday, 18 December at 10am
  • General sale: Friday, 19 December at 10am
