Orange Tree Theatre in Richmond has released a first look at its latest production, Ben and Imo, a Royal Shakespeare Company play exploring the tempestuous friendship between composer Benjamin Britten and Imogen Holst.

Written by acclaimed playwright Mark Ravenhill, the play takes us back to the run-up to the Coronation of Elizabeth II, as Britten races against the clock to write a grand new opera, while facing doubts, deadlines – and a stormy collaboration with fellow musician Holst.

Directed by Erica Whyman, former Acting Artistic Director of the RSC, Ben and Imo shines a spotlight on the emotional and financial cost of making meaningful art – and the sometimes explosive dynamics between two passionate creatives.

Samuel Barnett reprises his role as Britten, having first played the composer at the RSC. Known for The History Boys, Dirk Gently and Straight Line Crazy, Barnett brings both brilliance and vulnerability to the iconic composer.

Victoria Yeates returns as Imogen Holst, daughter of Gustav Holst and a musical powerhouse in her own right. Yeates, widely recognised for Call the Midwife and Fantastic Beasts, brings heart and energy to a character who challenges and inspires Britten in equal measure.

Ben and Imo runs at Orange Tree Theatre until 17 May 2025. Tickets are available via its website here.
