Second Repair Café event to give new life to broken and faulty products

Residents are being invited to bring along broken or faulty household items, from toasters to toys, to The Repair Café.

A team of expert 'fixers' will be offering free repairs, help and advice at the second event on Saturday at St Margarets Church.

The organisers said: "We're on a roll now with everyone realising how cool it is to repair stuff.

"So bring along your broken things and we will have a go at repairing them and give you the confidence to do your own repairs in the future."

The 20 volunteers can offer help with everything from games consoles to household electricals, clothes, upholstery hikes and ceramics.

More than 40 items were brought along to a first Repair Cafe event last month, which proved a huge success.

Among the items repaired at the first event were a lightsaber, Nespresso machine, sewing machine, and a teapot with a broken leg.

Also fixed by the team were a teddy with holes in hat, hairdryer, foot massager, lamp, and suitcase.

A growing network of the Repair Cafes aim to tap into a growing backlash against a 'throwaway culture' by promoting the philosophy or repair and re-use.

Mr Messenger said: "Some 43 items needed repairing. Half were electrical and two thirds were repaired fully or partially."

Looking ahead to future events, Mr Messenger said: "We still need repairers for: Clocks, Jewellery, more electrical and additional volunteers to help run the sessions."

The next event will be on March 19 and – in future – on the third Saturday of the month at St Margarets Church Hall (opposite St Margarets train station) from 10:30am-1.30pm. The last check-in is at 1pm.
