Jade Konkel-Roberts, who stars for Quins and Scotland on the rugby pitch, has won national recognition as a Firefighter.

The forward combines her sporting career with her role as a key team member of Red Watch, based at Feltham Fire Station, which she joined in 2021.

Last year, she was involved in combatting the grassland fires that threatened homes and businesses following the summer heatwave and record 40 degree temperatures.

Despite being very early, she was this week named runner up in the Firefighter Rising Star Award, which is organised by the Women in the Fire Service UK. (WFS)

The organisation said: "Jade was described as "advocate and ambassador for gender equality and empowerment" and someone who "never failed to shine".'

A delighted Jade said: "I love everything about my job, and within it comes a lifetime of learning."

Interviewed for International Women's Day in 2022 Jade spoke about wanting to be a firefighter for the rest of her career, and wanting to inspire more women to join the Brigade.

Since her time at school, Jade had been keen to pursue a career in the emergency services. After five years in the Army Cadets, she decided to apply with the aim to develop a long-lasting career whilst being able to balance it with rugby.

Her nominator, Mark Bayer, said: "Jade Konkel is not just an advocate and ambassador for gender equality and empowerment – she's a leading example in that she was Scottish Rugby's first full-time female player in the BT Sport Scottish Rugby Academy.

"Ever since then she has set an example on and off the pitch for gender equality.

"Jade Konkel has proven her determination all the way in her job as firefighter as well as a rugby player. Although very busy with her two jobs, she never fails to shine through kindness and by being an inspiration for others.

"There are only a few people who have achieved what Jade Konkel has achieved in fighting for equality."

London Fire Brigade Borough Commander, Peter Clark, said: "Jade is an asset to LFB and a brilliant role model for women in the fire service and sport.

"We've seen what a positive impact she has on her watch, station and local community. She is consistently championing more women to consider a career in the fire service, promoting diversity in sport and giving back to the community she serves. We are extremely proud of Jade."

Caroline Anderson, WFS Vice-Chair and award panel judge, added: "Jade was an army cadet for five years and then while following a career in rugby and athletics decided to join the fire service as a firefighter. We are thrilled to recognise her outstanding achievements and are sure Jade will continue to shine throughout her career."
