Runners took to the streets of Richmond on Sunday for the first ever Virtual London Marathon.

The official course was only completed by professionals in the race's 40th year.

Instead, members of the public were encouraged to run the 26.2 miles in their neighbourhoods.

The director of London Welsh, Gareth Vaughan Jones, was supported by companions as he finished his epic run at the rugby club in Old Deer Park.

"Finished the #virtualmarathon @LondonMarathon. Unique event, unique conditions and great to have some support among the way which I really appreciate," he said.

"Pleased to get in done in these awful conditions," Mr Jones added.

Mark Brocklehurst, a keen parkrunner, took to Richmond Park for his marathon which he completed for the Brighton-based charity Rockinghorse.

He was joined by friends including Sarah and Claire Gaskell, Pete Sanders and Lucy Ferman who shared this photo (above) of their colourful running outfits.

Mr Brocklehurst said: "Such a wet, windy and bloody wonderful day.

"Not the VMLM (Virgin Money London Marathon) any of us wanted or expected, but thanks to the good people of Richmond Park, it was a close second.

"So much encouragement from everyone out and about. A smashing time with friends old and new. It was never about the time but I'm amazed my legs were so strong particularly after 20 miles."

Ian and Kirsty McCubbin completed their run in the "biblical rain" in Wimbledon and Richmond Park.

Well done to you all
