Riveting account of high speed moped chase through Richmond

23rd Sep 2020 | Local News

Earlier today we reported the arrest of two moped riders who attempted to evade police.

They were chased across Richmond and wider Surrey for two hours by officers on the ground and in the skies - the National Police Air Service helicopter was involved in the pursuit.

Richmond Police has written a somewhat tongue-in-cheek account of the incident, titled 2Hour #NPAS chase ends.

The evening began to darken as the sun lazily commenced its drift out of view when the strident ring of the 999s flashed up on our Command Centre's displays. A moped involved in multiple incidents was streaking through our borough, trying desperately to escape. Quickly engaging our teams they flooded the area, hunting the currently missing moped.

The teams were joined by the "Thwomp-Thwomp-Thwomp" of a helicopter's rotor blades as the crew of NPAS (National Police Air Service) joined the search.

As the moped, which was now streaking through busy areas of Richmond, was sighted, a stinger was called for. Tactics begun to form to keep both members of the public and the riders safe and to end the chaotic pursuit.

The moped was getting desperate. It mounted the pavement, narrowly missing everything in its path.

This had to stop.

But it continued..

There was no way to safely stop the careering bike.

Through our ground and into Surrey, we pursued. The agility of the bike was causing an issue, but a tactical stop was authorised.

The Stinger was en route.

Back now into Kingston's grounds, the fleeing moped hurtled past a bystander, missing them by inches.

There.

There was our window.

The moped was funneled into a safe area and the TPAC car thundered into view, bringing the moped, and the chase, to an abrupt and crunching end.

Two arrests for multiple vehicle offences including dangerous driving, no insurance and a litany of others.

More to follow in this live investigation…
