'Frequent lightning' risk today as Richmond melts in 34C heat

By The Editor 31st Jul 2020

It is an incredibly hot day in Richmond with temperatures hitting 34C, but there is a chance it will all boil over.

A yellow weather warning has been issued by the Met Office for possible thunderstorms between 4pm and midnight in London and South East England.

The forecaster said: "Along with some very hot weather today, a few thunderstorms are likely to break out during the late afternoon and evening.

"Where thunderstorms do occur frequent lightning is expected, along with gusty winds.

"Unlike many days with thunderstorms over the UK, relatively little in the way of heavy rain is expected.

"However, a few places may be unlucky and catch a heavy downpour, perhaps even with some hail, and as much as 15-20 mm rain could fall in less than an hour, most likely in Eastern England."

Where thunderstorms do occur, the Met Office said to expect:

  • probably some damage to a few buildings and structures from lightning strikes
  • some short term loss of power and other services is likely
  • delays to train services are possible
  • some flooding of a few homes and businesses is possible, leading to some damage to buildings or structures
  • there is a small chance that driving conditions will be affected by spray, standing water and/or hail, leading to longer journey times by car and bus.

The temperature is set to hit 30C by 11am and it will rise to 34C by 2pm.

It will only cool down to 24C after the sun has set by 9pm.

The night will be very hot as well, with a low of 19C.
