Richmond's Overground line to be named 'Mildmay Line' as new names revealed
The new names of London's six Overground lines have been revealed today (Thursday 15 February), in a bid to make the line easier to navigate for passengers.
Last August, Transport for London (TfL) announced that it wanted to give the routes distinct identities.
Each of the six lines, which are currently only marked in Orange on the the Tube map will be given its own name and colour.
The line that serves Richmond will be named 'The Mildmay Line after a small charitable hospital based in Shoreditch, which played an important role during the HIV/Aids crisis in the 1980s.
The line will be marked on the map with blue parallel lines.
The lines will be named as follows:
- The Lioness line: Euston to Watford Junction - Running through Wembley, the name is to honour the achievements of the England women's football team. It will be marked with yellow parallel lines
- The Mildmay line: Stratford to Richmond/Clapham Junction - Named after the small charitable hospital in Shoreditch, which played an important role during the HIV/Aids crisis in the 1980s. It will be marked with blue parallel lines
- The Windrush line: Highbury & Islington to Clapham Junction/New Cross/Crystal Palace/West Croydon - Running through several areas with strong ties to Caribbean communities, including Dalston Junction, Peckham Rye and West Croydon, it has been named to honour the Windrush community. It will be marked with red parallel lines
- The Weaver line: Liverpool Street to Cheshunt/Enfield Town/Chingford - With stops including Liverpool Street, Spitalfields, Bethnal Green and Hackney, the route travels through several areas of London known for their importance in the textile trade. It will be marked with maroon parallel lines
- The Suffragette line: Gospel Oak to Barking Riverside - Named to celebrate how London's East End working-class community fought for women's rights, the line also runs to Barking which is home of the longest-surviving suffragette, Annie Huggett, who died aged 103. It will be marked with green parallel lines
- The Liberty line: Romford to Upminster - This line runs through Havering and celebrates the historic independence of the people of Havering and its status as a Royal Liberty, an area that traditionally had more self-governance and autonomy.
Geoff Coleman, Chief Executive Officer for Mildmay Mission Hospital, said: "We are deeply honoured that the Mildmay line was chosen as one of the new London Overground lines names in recognition of the work of the dedicated doctors, nurses and support staff at the Mildmay Hospital.
"From its humble origins in the 1860s - serving the poorest people of the East End - to its pivotal role during the HIV/AIDS crisis in the 80s and 90s, Mildmay has evolved into an internationally renowned rehab centre, and our dedicated team continues to serve people from across London.
"More than just tracks and stations, the Mildmay line symbolises a journey of acceptance, love, and belonging - a vibrant thread connecting our collective past, present, and future."
Michael Roberts, Chief Executive of the capital's transport watchdog, London TravelWatch, said: "It's good to see the new names of the six London Overground lines revealed today (15th February 2024).
"Distinguishing between the separate lines should help passengers plan journeys more easily and know which services are running at times of disruption simply by hearing the name of the line.
"We look forward to seeing this rolled out and will be keeping an eye on how it's integrated into the current system, particularly with TfL's journey planner and map."
