Richmond Park has been named among the 15 best picnic spots in the entire country, according to TripAdvisor data.

The protected, historic park, which is home to hundreds of deer and other wildlife with impressive sweeping views, streams and ponds, is also among the top five in London.

The results were created by analysing 1,020 attractions listed on Tripadvisor as 'Things to do' in the UK and finding the 15 places that most frequently had 'picnic' mentioned in reviews.

The Royal Park attracts visitors from the capital and beyond and its popularity for picnics carries its own challenges, not least in terms of the litter it creates.

The park authorities have also identified a problem linked to visitors treating Richmond Park as a petting zoo with a result the wild animals can choose to raid the spreads laid out on the grass.

The park authorities are keen to stress that these are wild animals and there are a number of examples of them chasing and injuring both people and dogs.

First place in the picnic league went to Hyde Park, ahead of St Fagans National Museum of History, Cardiff, St James' Park, in London, Wollaton Park, in Nottinghamshire and .  Brimham Rocks, Summerbridge, North Yorkshire.

Richmond places 12th in the national table and fourth in London, between Regents Park and Greenwich Park.

The research was sponsored by the meal kit company Hello Fresh ahead of National Picnic Week.
