The National Archives welcomed leading scientists, artists, and changemakers last on Thursday, 20 November for a performance challenging perceptions of neurodivergence.

The production, 'The Power of Different' explores experiences of neurodivergent individuals through dance and storytelling.

The event brought together American psychoanalyst Dr. Gail Saltz from New York and Jane Green MBE for a live discussion exploring the creative inspiration behind the production and the latest research on neurodivergence.

Dr. Saltz, a clinical associate professor of psychiatry at Weill-Cornell Medical College, provided the scientific foundation for the work through her bestselling book exploring connections between brain differences and exceptional abilities.

She said: "I am deeply honoured to bring the message to a wider audience via these innovative performances, namely that we must eradicate the stigma of brain differences.

"The unique and astonishing abilities of neurodivergent people have shaped the best of our world and it is fitting that this information should be shared in the form of a theatrical dance production."

The evening also featured a short film giving voice to young people's experiences with long covid. Lives Interrupted, created in collaboration with Long Covid Kids charity, illuminated challenges faced by those living with long-term effects of the virus.

Anne-Marie Smalldon, artistic director of Combination Dance, said: "It's been such a privilege to direct The Power of Different throughout 2025.

"The project celebrates the extraordinary talents and creativity that so often accompany neurodivergent minds. I believe this work will have a lasting impact — challenging perceptions, sparking understanding, and showing that difference is not a deficit, but a source of brilliance and innovation."

The production was written by acclaimed playwright Katie Arnstein with choreography by Matt Walker of Ombrascura Dance, and featured professional dancers alongside narrative storytelling.

The project received funding from Arts Council England, Richmond Council, and The Eastern City Business Improvement District, with The National Archives providing venue partnership.

The event contributes to growing awareness of neurodivergence, which encompasses conditions including autism, ADHD, dyslexia, and dyspraxia.
