Richmond borough is set to the party capital of the country for the Coronation of King Charles III and Camilla, Queen Consort, on Saturday, May 6.

Some 196 street party plans have been notified to the Council for the Bank Holiday weekend, which seems certain to be the most of any similar area in the country.

Separately, there will be a Coronation Day event in Hampton Wick High Street on May 6 with food, stalls and entertainment. On the same day, the people of Barnes will hold an afternoon Coronation Celebration at Hammersmith Bridge.

Marble Hill House will be hosting a 'Make your own crown' event for children on May 6, and St Margarets is planning a Coronation Fair in Crown Road, on Sunday, May 7.

Historic Hampton Court Palace will host a big screen event for the Coronation on the big day, while visitors will be able to explore the gardens for free.

Syon House, in Brentford, will be open its gardens and Great Conservatory for free to visitors on the Bank Holiday Monday, May 8.

The figure of 196 street parties for Richmond borough alone compares to a total of 289 street parties shared so far – up to April 13 - on an official government interactive map of events being held across the country over the Coronation Bank Holiday weekend.

While Richmond's party and bunting count will be particularly high, the total is down by around one 40 per cent compared to the 331 street parties and associated road closures that took place last year to mark the late Queen's Platinum Jubilee.

Richmond Council encouraged residents to take part in the festivities by waiving he administration fee for street party road closures.

It also offered grants of up to £5,000 to registered voluntary and community organisations who wish to bring together communities to celebrate or organise volunteering projects as part of the Big Help Out.

Council Leader, Cllr Gareth Roberts, said: "Last year over three hundred residential streets celebrated the late Queen Elizabeth's Platinum Jubilee, bringing together neighbours, family and friends. Sadly, a lot has changed since then, but this year we find ourselves celebrating a coronation!

"Buckingham Palace has put communities and celebrating local voluntary work at the heart of their Coronation plans, so I look forward to our borough coming together again, with the same show of community spirit as we did last year."

Applications for street party road closures closed on April 2.

Culture Secretary Lucy Frazer said: "We want everyone up and down the country to have the opportunity to get involved in the Coronation of His Majesty The King and Her Majesty The Queen Consort."

The Coronation will take place across a celebratory weekend of events with the Coronation Service taking place at Westminster Abbey in London. Their Majesties will be crowned in the same location Her Late Majesty The Queen was crowned 70 years ago.

On Sunday, May 7, the Coronation Concert will take place at Windsor Castle with iconic locations across the UK lit up using projections, lasers, drone displays and illuminations.

Across the weekend, Coronation Big Lunches and street parties will be held in the UK and Commonwealth. Big Lunches take place across the UK annually and last year they raised more than £22 million for local charities.

On Monday, May 8 , a Bank Holiday has been proclaimed by the Prime Minister so the nation can come together to support charities in the Big Help Out. In tribute to His Majesty The King's lifetime of service, the Big Help Out will encourage people to support the causes that matter the most to them with activity already planned by organisations including The Scouts, Royal Voluntary Service, National Trust and RNLI.
