Water has been restored to homes in Richmond after a major leak took almost three days to repair.

Residents living near the junction of Church Road and Sheen Road experienced low water pressure, or in some cases no water at all, after roadworks being carried out by UK Power Networks led to an accidental leak on Sunday, 9 August.

A contractor for UK Power Networks damaged a water main by mistake as the company install ducts for new high-voltage electricity cables at the site.

Images shared on social media showed water spilling onto the junction, with neighbours "dismayed by Thames Water's slowness" in responding to the issue.

In a statement yesterday (Tuesday, 11 August), the Richmond Society said: "We are dismayed by Thames Water's slowness in responding to a major water leak, which arose during roadworks by contractors.

"Thousands of gallons of water have been lost in the middle of a drought; and homes have been left without water or with very low pressure.

"Residents have found it difficult to contact Thames Water, and there has been no substantive information from them, and no remedial action for those without any supply at all.

"This is an unacceptable standard of service from a utility company."

A Richmond Council spokesperson told Nub News: "Richmond Council is aware of the leak at the junction of Church Road and Sheen Road.

"The leak was repaired by Thames Water last night (10 August), and they have handed the site over to UK Power Networks to reinstate the carriageway.

"We are waiting for an estimated completion date for these works."

UK Power Networks commented: "We apologise for the inconvenience and thank residents and road users for their patience.

"Our work is currently due to be completed by 21 August and will return the road to normal as soon as is safely possible."
