Petersham Road not affected by sinkhole after storm damage, Council confirms

No sinkhole was detected on Petersham Road, Richmond Council says, following damage to the road during yesterday morning's storm (Tuesday, 23 June).
The London Fire Brigade confirmed that it had taken around 400 calls since midnight (23 June) after a series of intense thunderstorms struck the capital.
After the storm, water damaged Petersham Road, which initially led local residents to suspect a sinkhole had formed. However, the Council's highways team said this was not the case.
A Richmond Council spokesperson said: "Our highways team responded quickly this morning following reports of damage to the road surface on Petersham Road after heavy rainfall.
"Officers attended the scene and found localised stormwater damage to the carriageway. However, no sinkhole was identified.
"The area was made safe and the road has since reopened. We will continue to monitor the site and have made Thames Water aware of the situation. They will now carry out further investigations before any permanent repairs are undertaken."
In addition, Chair of the Transport and Air Quality Committee Councillor Alexander Ehmann said highway officers found a large carriageway hole, not a sinkhole, and that they are in communication with Thames Water about "their responsibility for this damage".
This incident comes as last month a burst water main caused flooding on Richmond Hill before Thames Water teams repaired the pipe.
