A new mural in Richmond Station has been announced by the Richmond in Europe Association.

The artwork will celebrate the 65th anniversary of Richmond's twinning with French and German towns Fontainebleau and Konstanz.

The mural is designed in a vintage 1930s art style to reflect the art deco design of the recently refurbished station, and will be situated in the foyer.

It features imagery celebrating Richmond, Konstanz and Fontainebleau.

Alan Mockford, REA Chair, said: "It is designed so as everyone arrives by train they will see that Richmond is an outlooking, international hub of a town."

"Richmond values and embraces its shared European heritage and connections."

The mural is part of ongoing celebrations taking place before the Reaffirmation weekend on 6-8 June, which will celebrate the 65 years of European Partnerships.

Mockford added: "It is a celebration of all things European."

The artwork will complement the 22 town twinning signs that are situated to greet you as you enter the borough.

The Richmond in Europe Association are hoping that the new mayor of Richmond, Councillor Penny Frost, will unveil the mural at the end of May.

Events celebrating the twinning anniversary will continue over the summer, cumulating in Reaffirmation week.

Hundreds of guests from Richmond's twinned towns are expected and events including receptions, concerts sporting events are planned.

On 20 May, former Richmond Mayor Clare Head will be giving a talk celebrating European partnerships at Whitton Library.

The Richmond in Europe Association will also be at the Rotary Fair on Twickenham Green on 26 May.

Leaflets, commemorative mugs and bags celebrating the anniversary can be picked up at any library, the Visit Richmond Kiosk in Richmond Station and the Civic Centre.

The REA says 500 mugs have already been sold ahead of the event.
