New Kew traffic scheme launched to curb 'rat-running' in residential streets
By Cesar Medina 31st Mar 2026
A new traffic reduction scheme has come into force in Kew as part of efforts to tackle "rat-running" in residential streets.
Richmond Council confirmed the Kew Green Traffic Reduction Scheme began operating on 30 March 2026, covering roads to the east of Kew Green.
The scheme applies to parts of Gloucester Road, Bushwood Road, Priory Road and Forest Road, as well as areas east of Kew Road.
It follows a petition submitted by residents in November 2023, which gathered 462 signatures, representing around 68% of households in the area, calling for action to reduce through-traffic.
After consultations, traffic surveys and discussions involving councillors, officers and Transport for London, the Council concluded there was "overwhelming support" for the scheme.
The measures are now in place 24 hours a day and are enforced using Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras.
Drivers who are not exempt and enter restricted areas will receive a Penalty Charge Notice (PCN).
Residents can register their vehicles for exemptions, while arrangements have also been put in place for visitors, carers and healthcare professionals.
The scheme is being introduced on an experimental basis, with a statutory consultation period of at least six months allowing feedback from the community.
The Council says the aim is to reduce congestion, improve road safety and create a calmer environment for those living in the area.
