Richmond Gymnastics has partnered with the Sporting Memories charity to bring a new age-friendly and dementia-friendly programme to Kew, offering support and connection for people aged 50 and over.

The weekly sessions, held every Wednesday from 11.30am to 12.30pm, use the power of sport to help participants reminisce, reconnect, and share cherished sporting stories, all while improving their physical and mental wellbeing.

Alongside the reminiscence activities, participants can also take part in Love to Move, a unique chair-based gymnastics programme developed by the British Gymnastics Foundation.

These specially designed exercises use bilaterally asymmetrical movement patterns, encouraging the left and right sides of the brain to work independently.

Research has shown that this approach can benefit older adults, including those living with dementia or mild cognitive impairment, by improving cognitive function, coordination, and independence in daily life.

The sessions offer:

  • A chance to chat and build friendships in a supportive environment
  • Regular activity outside the home to boost social engagement and wellbeing
  • Exercises that aid movement, memory and daily functioning

By blending physical activity, cognitive stimulation and social interaction, Sporting Memories provides a holistic approach to keeping older adults active, connected and confident.
