Knock-on effects from the closure of Hammersmith Bridge are being felt in Richmond this morning.

There is heavy traffic in the town centre and on Lower Richmond Road.

According to the AA this is due to the diversion which is in place because of the bridge being shut.

The AA said: "Queueing traffic on A205 South Circular both ways from A306 Roehampton Lane (Red Rover) to A316 Lower Richmond Road (Chalker's Corner).

"Due to the closure of Hammersmith Bridge, traffic is diverting via Chiswick and Putney bridges."

The news that it is having such an effect on the roads network in South West London will reignite frustrations over the closure.

Richmond Park MP Sarah Olney and Richmond Council have led calls for government funding for repairs that will allow the bridge to reopen.

It is currently closed to everyone - motorists, pedestrians and cyclists.
