A flood alert remains in place along tidal sections of the River Thames, from Teddington Weir to Putney Bridge.

The alert, first released by the Environment Agency (EA) yesterday morning, 7 May, continues to warn of high river levels "as a result of spring tides".

Locals should be especially cautious around high tide, forecast at around 3:35pm today and 3:45am tomorrow morning, 9 May, around Richmond.

Flooding of low-lying roads and footpaths is still expected, which may exist for one to two hours either side of high tide.

High tides present a significant danger to unprepared towpath users, with an incident near Richmond in April requiring assistance from Teddington's RNLI lifeboat station.

'Without them we could have been done for,' said one walker after being cut off by a fast-rising high tide near Richmond. (Photo: Teddington RNLI)

Water levels peaked at 4.83m during the incident on 7 April. They are estimated to reach 4.75m today, 8 May, lower than yesterday's estimate of 4.88m.

While spring tides often increase the river's water levels, the EA says: "The river flow at Teddington Weir is high for this time of year."

This is slowly falling, but is expected "to remain high for the next few days".

High-risk areas include:

  • Towpath below Teddington Lock
  • Riverside and The Embankment at Twickenham
  • Friars Lane and Water Lane (TW9)
  • Ranelagh Drive (TW1)
  • Thames Bank at Mortlake (SW14)
  • Chiswick Mall and Strand on the Green (W4)
  • Putney Embankment (SW15)

Live updates from the EA can be found here.
