The son of the late Francis Spencer with whom he ran a ferry crossing between St Margarets and Ham says the support from the community has been fantastic.

Hammertons Ferry announced Francis's death at the age of 74 on Sunday:

Today we said goodbye to the bravest, most courageous man we know. The most wonderful husband, father and grandad to us all and a friend and captain to you. He left his mark on everyone he met with his infectious smile and courtesy.

With the heart of a lion he fought cancer with the upmost strength and dignity. Our hearts are broken.

We thank you for your kind words and support during this time.

Family-run Hammertons pride themselves on being "the last remaining privately owned foot ferry on the Tidal Thames".

They take people across the water from the towpath near the playground in Marble Hill Park to the banks outside Ham House.

Reflecting on the reception from the community, son Andy told Richmond Nub News: "I cannot put into words how incredible the support has been! The comments on our social media platforms that people have left have been overwhelming and heartwarming.

"They are such special memories for me and my family.

"Business is as usual. It has been decided by us as a family that we will continue the work my Dad started and open as usual every weekend from 10am-dusk from now until March. From March-October we will be open seven days a week."

Lifelong friend Danny Collier, of Colliers Launches, paid tribute to Francis in an obituary in the Port of London Authority's Tidal Thames magazine.

He said: "Diligent and caring, he was respected by both the river community and the wider public.

"He was an intrinsic part of the fabric of Twickenham and will be sorely missed by his family and all who knew him.

"We have lost a friend."
