Emergency repairs are underway on Richmond Hill, with the road closed outside Glenmore House following a serious incident involving a burst 14-inch high-pressure water main in the early hours of Sunday morning (20 July).

Thames Water engineers were initially unable to shut off the main due to a valve failure and the risk of cutting off water supply to nearby homes confirm Richmond Council.

They now plan to fully shut the main in the early hours of today (22 July) to minimise disruption.

Replacement parts and a new section of pipe have been delivered, and engineers are working to complete repairs today.

The water main burst has also caused significant damage to a 160mm gas main, boring a hole through the pipe and allowing water to enter.

Cadent Gas are on site and have patched the hole to prevent further water ingress. However, they are unable to begin full repairs until Thames Water has completed their work.

It is currently unclear how much water has entered the gas main or what the long-term impact may be for residents.

Cadent Gas are carrying out further excavations near the junction of Vineyard to begin draining the water from their system and are assessing the extent of the damage.

Residents in the affected area are being notified directly by letter, and are urged to contact Cadent Gas on 0800 389 8000 immediately if they experience any issues with their gas supply.

Richmond Council said: "Thames Water currently have 4-way temporary traffic signals at the junction of Star and Garter Hill carrying out a Clean Water Tanker Operation due to the Burst Water Main.

"While they complete the repair, water is being added back into the pipes using tankers."
