East Sheen to get new artificial cricket pitch
By Cesar Medina 5th May 2026
Richmond Council's plans to bring a new artificial cricket pitch to East Sheen has been approved.
The Council Sports Development team put forward proposals to install one new artificial cricket pitch at Palewell Playing Fields.
A Richmond Council planning officer in their report said: "The applicant puts forward that the introduction of an artificial pitch will provide a good quality pitch and be available in all weather conditions which will increase youth and girls cricket provision, particularly for local clubs such as Sheen Scorchers and Sheen Park Cricket Club.
"This improvement will allow for consistent good pitch availability due to the artificial nature and allows the grass pitch more maintenance time to become a better facility overall."
As it stands, the Council say the turf is not in good condition with the new turf proposed to be 30m in length by 2.74m in width.
In addition, the Council approved the plans as it aligns with the aspirations set out in the Playing Pitch and Outdoor Sports Strategy and the associated Action Plan with installing an additional non-turf pitch at Palewell Common to support ongoing cricket use at the site, particularly for youth and girls cricket.
Given the relatively small scale of the built development (the non-turf pitch) and the enhanced cricket provision it will provide on-site.
It is considered the proposal also aligns with exception 5 of Spots England's Playing Fields Policy and Guidance.
