Drivers warned as toad migration returns to Ham Common

Roads surrounding Ham Common, Richmond are doing their part in protecting toads in their annual spring migration for spawning season.

To protect the toads from embarking on their treacherous journey across the 100 metre path from the woodland areas to the pond, there are temporary signs alerting drivers to drive carefully.

Between March and early April, Church Road in Ham has various traffic warning signs that read, 'Road closed for migrating toads. Toad patrol volunteers on the road'.

These signs help manage the road and reduce the number of toads being killed; without this protection, many of them would not survive the crossing.

A Richmond Council spokesperson said: "It's a small but important way we protect our wildlife while helping residents enjoy one of Richmond's much-loved green spaces.

"Every spring, our community shows how a little care goes a long way for Ham's wildlife."

The migration usually takes place at night or in the early morning, often after a wet day when conditions are ideal.

To help protect the toads and reduce high mortality rates, Richmond Council first introduced a road closure in 2010 after local residents raised concerns.

This year, the roads aren't closed, as most toads are now moving to the new ponds within the main body of Ham Common woods to breed.

But the signs are still prominent as they are every year, designed to alert drivers, cyclists and walkers to travel with caution to avoid squashing the toads.

Locals say the measure reflects Richmond's commitment to protecting its wildlife.

Maureen, 68, said: "It's definitely a bit unusual, but in a good way.

"You wouldn't find this in busy cities.

"And this pond is home to swans and ducks, so it's important we do our part in looking after all creatures around here."

Adrian, also 68, added: "Only in Richmond would you find something as whacky as this."

This is part of a wider initiative of Toads on Roads, where volunteers across the country help amphibians cross busy roads during their migration.

In 2025 alone, around 156,227 toads were assisted at crossing sites, although 17,251 were still killed by traffic.

These statistics show that even at sites where there is human help some toads still don't make it, highlighting the danger to toads in places where there is no intervention.

Froglife said toads play an important role in the ecosystem by feeding on pests such as slugs and insects, making them "a gardener's best friend".

Recent research published in 2025 by Froglife indicates that the common toad has declined by 41% in the last 40 years, but areas where Toad Patrols are present are making a difference to local populations.

For many residents, the annual crossing has become a small but meaningful reminder of the role communities can play in protecting local wildlife.
