The Royal Parks charity has today announced dogs are no longer required to be on leads in Bushy and Richmond park.

Dogs on leads became compulsory from May 1 until 31 July to protect both deer and dogs during the deer birthing season.

During the three-month period, around 300 deer were born in the parks and an estimated 120 in the neighbouring Hampton Court Park.

In a statement on Twitter, the Royal Parks said: "A huge thank you to everyone who has kept their dog on a lead or exercised their dog elsewhere during the deer birthing season in Richmond and Bushy Parks this year.

"There is no longer a requirement to have your dog on a lead, but please do remain respectful of your surroundings."

The season marked a particular vulnerable time for female deer, who hide their young in bracken and long grass to conceal them from dogs and other perceived predators.

In news late last week, the Royal Parks reminded visitors to be cautious when bringing picnics with them during their stay as deer have been pictured devouring the remnants of picnics that have been carelessly left behind.

Caution was urged as much of the rubbish left behind is plastic that deer unwittingly consume.

The Royal Parks have advised visitors to avoid the following deer hotspots in Richmond and Bushy parks to prevent any potential poisoning of wildlife:

  • The lawns between the Model Boat Pond and Playground in Bushy Park
  • The areas between Richmond Gate and Hornbeam Avenue in Richmond Park
  • By Pen Ponds in Richmond Park

Similarly the Parks give the following advice when approached by deer when visiting the Parks:

- Cover their food and close any bags

- Leave the food behind and move back to a safe distance

- Wait for the deer to move on before returning to their picnic spot
